Three generations, one recipe.
My mother, Amelia holding our family sauce.
A family tradition carried through three generations.
Our Story
Our story began in Mozambique, with a family recipe passed from my grandmother, Avó Helena.
Although she could not read or write, Avó Helena was a strong and resourceful woman with an entrepreneurial spirit. She farmed, created and sold what she could to support her family - but one thing she kept close was her simple recipe for her '“authentic peri-peri sauce ( piri-piri in Portuguese).”
Using fresh chillies, citrus and ingredients from the land, she created “a sauce built on flavour”, balance and tradition.
The recipe was passed from Avó Helena to my mother, who carried through life and kept the tradition alive.
Today, at 83 years old and after surviving a stroke, my mother still prepares our '“ Piri-Piri “ with the same care and passion-even using just one hand.
Growing up, this sauce was a simple part of our family. It was never made to became a product. It was something prepared with love, shared around the table, and enjoyed by everyone.
Over the years, friends, neighbours and family kept asking for more. Even people who usually avoid hot sauces loved it because Shelita’s Peri-Peri is not about extreme heat - but Flavour.
Bright, zesty and balanced, every bottle carries a piece of Mozambique and the generations that come before it.
The elephant in our logo is also part of our journey. Taken from a photograph captured almost 30 years ago while travelling through Southern Africa and reconnecting with our family roots.
Today, I continue this recipe as the next generation-preserving my grandmother’s tradition and honouring my mother, one bottle at a time.
A little heat.
A lot of flavour.
Pour.
Dip.
Drizzle.
